Planning for Your Plastic Surgery Recovery
Planning in advance makes recovery easier
Planning for your homecoming and recovery after plastic surgery can make your first few post-surgery days easier. You may be amazed to know how many things can be overlooked in the recovery process. Being properly prepared for the inevitable post-operative period when you will be tired, sore and uncomfortable will help make your recovery more comfortable.
Search Results for: Plastic Surgery
Simply stepping out to the store for a much needed item can be a painful, possibly embarrassing and sometimes dangerous undertaking. So be ready with what you’ll need where you’ll need it to make your life for the next few days much simpler. Follow these helpful tips gathered from plastic surgery doctors and patients themselves.
You don’t have to tell
You may be uncomfortable telling friends and coworkers that you’re undergoing cosmetic surgery. If this is the case, simply tell them you are having “female” surgery, taking an at-home vacation, or having reconstructive surgery. If you don’t want everyone to know, you simply don’t have to tell them.
Prepare your home and recovery area
Set up your bedroom and living room for your recovery convenience. Make sure everything you may need is well within reach and that nothing you might need is down low or up high. Stretching and bending can spell disaster for recovery in the early stages of recovery.
Stock up!
Buy about two weeks of groceries and household supplies before you go into your surgery. Prepare meals you like and freeze them for convenience. No one wants to cook when they’re in cosmetic surgery recovery mode.
Have lots of water and soft foods on hand
You should have plenty of fluids and easy to eat, soft foods like yogurt, apple sauce and protein shakes on hand for your homecoming. Place pitchers and glasses of water in easy to get to places, and have bendable straws available to use for taking liquids while in a reclined position.
Fill your prescriptions in advance
Make sure to fill prescription for medications and antibiotics well in advance of the surgery so you won’t run short or have to go out and get more.
Get your post-surgery care products in ahead of time
Have your plastic surgery after-care aids ready to go. Any compression garments or ice packs, bandages and creams that your surgeon recommended for you should be on hand and ready to go for when you come home.
Make sure you’ve got transportation
You may not be able to drive for some time after your surgery, so line up a personal chauffeur. A good friend, a family member, your spouse or even a taxi service should be depended on to get you to and from your follow-up appointments and wherever you need to go.
Get in-home help for your first night home
Arrange for a friend or family member to stay with you for the first couple of days. You should feel comfortable asking this person to refill your drink, prepare your foods, refresh ice packs and help you with whatever you may need. If you wish to hire a private duty nurse, your surgeon should be able to recommend a nursing agency. Costs for this service may vary from $250 to $500 per day.
Have lots of pillows on hand
You’ll want pillows for propping and padding while you’re recovering. This will make staying still for long periods of time far more comfortable.
Think about a hand held shower head
Bathing and showering, once allowed by your doctor, can be rather difficult. Having a hand held shower head will help you bathe while avoiding suture areas.
Be information-ready
Post your doctor’s telephone number and any other important phone numbers near the phone and consider purchasing a speaker phone. After face lift surgery or ear surgery, using a telephone can be nearly impossible without one.
Be positive!
A positive attitude can be the key to a quick, comfy recovery from cosmetic surgery. A sense of humor and a lot of patience will help this time go quickly, so try to stay upbeat and optimistic as you rest and recover.
